I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change
book and lyrics by Joe DiPietro
music by Jimmy Roberts
directed by Adrienne Cox
Like many recent films, plays and novels, “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change” is about “relationships,” but few are as popular as this witty musical by Joe Pietro and Jimmy Roberts. After many performances around the world, we are lucky that it is again coming to Albuquerque, directed by Adobe Theater regular Adrienne Cox. This delightful work takes us from “first date” through weddings, babies and beyond. The show opens at the ADOBE on Friday, Aug. 10 and runs through Sept. 2.
A talented cast of only two men and two women perform nearly 5 dozen roles with music provided by pianist Mindy Sampson. This production is in English although the show has been translated into 14 languages!
The ensemble cast includes Brian Clifton, a local musical theater regular, last seen at the Adobe as Brother Boy in “Sordid Lives,” and Jessica Fisher, another familiar musical theater face, having played the aviatrix Trix in “The Drowsy Chaperone.” Joining them are two Adobe newcomers, each with a flair for the classical: Jimmy Finch, a recent graduate of UNM’s Music Master’s program, and Tasha Waters, a graduate of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
In describing “I Love You…” the NY Times says: “It’s funny, it’s witty!” With over 5000 performances it is the second longest running musical off Broadway, and it has been called “the perfect date-night comedy for adults.” Yes, there is lots of frank talk about sex, but nothing smutty, though due to language and subject matter this production is not recommended for children under 17. So don’t miss this perfect summer show and watch for Early Bird special prices on opening weekend. (You can save a trip to Denver where it is currently being performed at the Arts Center where tickets start at $39!)
